Mister Station Tells All
by CxBThis is one of the earliest parts of the story in terms of writing, but happens at around the mid-point of the narrative.
To be honest, that approach has turned out to be a huge pain in the arse, and is something I’m going to try to avoid in future, because not only will it need editing along with everything else, it’ll also need editing just to get integrated with everything else.
I’m putting it in here because this is sort of where it belongs, and so that I can continue to post the parts which come after it as I write them and type them up. I’m not doing that editing to integrate it at this time, because I want to finish the whole story, flaws and all, before going back to edit.
“You know the remains of the bridge, down at the bottom of the valley?” Started Mister Station. “Covered in vines, out in the middle of nowhere, no road or anything, just the path through the woods?”
They all nodded.
“Well, we did that. Tore up the bridge, carried away the pieces, planted anything that’d grow quickly, so that it’d look like it was abandoned years ago. “He took a sip of coffee. “But before that, we dug up the road on the other side.”
Cy raised a hand. “But there isn’t a road on the other side; There’s not even a path, there’s just … trees. Old trees.”
Mister Station smiled and waited.
“You planted them there?”
“Yep. Dug up the road, moved trees to fill the space where the road was. Further out we took down the roadsigns mentioning this place.”
He took another sip of coffee.
“We couldn’t do much about the turnoff, so we blew the hell out of it and scattered wreckage around. We figured that just destroying the area would look suspicious, but if it looked like an engagement happened, people wouldn’t wonder why all the craters were there.”
It was Luce who asked.
“How? That would be so much work.”
A feeble voice drifted out from Mister Station’s room.
“Well, we happened to have this big fighting machine and someone who knew how to drive it.” Lumpy paused for a coughing fit. “Turned out that those things are good for more than just blowing shit up.”
“It was still a huge amount of work.” Mister Station continued the explanation. “But the big machine let us do the big things quickly, so we could get an OK job done fast, then go back to get it right later on.”
“What about the machine?” Asked Cy. “I’ve never seen it, so did you hide it somewhere? Or destroy it?”
Mister Station threw his head back and laughed, then fought for composure as Cy looked offended.
“I’m sorry Cy; That was unkind of me.” He apologised. “It just struck me funny, what you said.”
“You’ve probably seen it every day of your life, Cy.” Lumpy called out. “We disassembled it and re-used what we could; Some parts for the fake battle site, the motors got turned into generators, the lights … Well, we just put them somewhere more useful.”
“The only parts that didn’t get repurposed were the life support & medical systems, though we did move them around so they’d do more than just keep the driver going.”
Cy looked at the pharmaceutical printer, then at Mister Station’s cables, and then out to the workshop. He slowly pointed, but Luce asked the question.
“You were the driver?”
Mister Station put down his coffee cup and nodded. “They used to call us pilots, not drivers.”
