We Have Another Problem, And It’s A Really Big Job For Three Kids
by CxBThis is one of the earliest parts of the story in terms of writing, but happens at around the mid-point of the narrative.
To be honest, that approach has turned out to be a huge pain in the arse, and is something I’m going to try to avoid in future, because not only will it need editing along with everything else, it’ll also need editing just to get integrated with everything else.
I’m putting it in here because this is sort of where it belongs, and so that I can continue to post the parts which come after it as I write them and type them up. I’m not doing that editing to integrate it at this time, because I want to finish the whole story, flaws and all, before going back to edit.
“We have another problem.” Luce announced, bluntly.
Cy & Bug looked up from the table they’d been organising supplies on, searching for some sign of a joke. The look on Mister Station’s face told them otherwise.
Bug collapsed back into a chair, like she’d suddenly run out of energy.
“What is it now?” Cy asked, continuing to sort medicines. “Another Wanderer?”
“Uhhh…” Luce and Mister Station looked at each other, then spoke in unison. “Maybe?”
Luce stared at the station ceiling, slumping back in her chair.
Cy lay on the platform, just outside the door.
Bug leaned forward in her chair, face-down on the table.
Off to the side, in his bedroom, Mister Station helped Lumpy to sit up.
“So aside from Mister Station.” Bug began. “We’re the only ones who can do anything.”
“At least until some of us recover.” Lumpy confirmed.
“Which could take some time, unfortunately.” Mister Station added. “And I’ll need to stay to tend to them.”
“Because you’re actually immune, not just …” Luce paused, searching for the right word.
“Temporarily protected.” Cy contributed. “And it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t have to care for them, because you can’t leave the Station anyway?”
“Not for long enough, no.”
“So we need to track back to where this Wanderer came from …” Bug continued.
“Carefully!!” Interrupted Lumpy and Mister Station in unison.
“ … Find and … Carefully … destroy any campsite or trash or anything that might have got into the river.”
“And then.” Luce added. “Keep following the trail to find out how this Wanderer got an entire railcart into the valley through a collapsed tunnel. And then do something about it.”
“And be on the lookout for whatever infected him?” Lumpy suggested.
Everyone looked at Lumpy.
“You saw how fast it hit the town, yes?” He asked. “Maybe a day, day and a half to put everyone on their asses?”
Mister Station looked thoughtful, but Luce got there first.
“Which means that he can’t have travelled that far between where we found him and where he got sick?” She asked. “One or two days, pulling a railcart; That isn’t very far.”
“Bits are downhill, which would be faster because you can coast.” Bug thought aloud, still face-down on the table. “But outside the valley it has to be uphill, because that’s how hills work, and he can’t have gone that fast uphill.”
They were all silent for a while.
“This is a really big job, isn’t it?” Cy said, not really asking. “Not a job for three kids.”
“No it isn’t.” Mister Station agreed, coming into the main room. “It’s not even a job for three adults, let along three kids.”
He fiddled with the pharmacy printer for a few moments, then gently patted it.
“During the wars I’m not even sure they’d send three soldiers on a job this … woolly and undefined, but you three are all the village have right now, and I don’t think we can wait.” He gestured around at the unconscious people scattered all over the station. “Right now, you three kids are all any of them have.”
“But hey, no pressure.” Lumpy muttered.
